About the UT Tower:

The University of Texas Tower, often referred to as the Main Building, stands as an iconic symbol of the University of Texas at Austin and the city itself. Designed by French-born architect Paul Philippe Cret and completed in 1937, the 307-foot-tall, 27-story structure replaced the original Victorian-Gothic Old Main Building, which had served as the campus’s centerpiece since 1882 but was demolished in 1934 due to the need for expanded library space. Cret’s Beaux-Arts design, incorporating Spanish Renaissance elements like a red-tiled roof, was part of a broader campus master plan that positioned the Tower at the heart of four radiating pedestrian malls. Constructed with Indiana limestone, Austin shell stone, and recycled bricks from Old Main, the Tower was initially built to house the university’s central library, with book stacks in the upper floors and grand reading rooms below, though it now primarily contains administrative offices and a smaller life sciences library.
Upon its opening on February 27, 1937, the Tower became an instant landmark, surpassing the Texas Capitol as Austin’s tallest building and dominating the skyline for decades, thanks to a rare exemption from the city’s 200-foot height limit. Its first illumination on October 19, 1937, with orange and white floodlights, marked the beginning of a cherished tradition, with the lights used to celebrate academic achievements, athletic victories, and special occasions, such as lighting the windows to form a “1” for national championships or the graduating class year during commencement. The Tower’s carillon of 56 bells, the largest in Texas, was installed at its summit and is played daily by students, while the observation deck, just below, offered public views of Austin until safety concerns led to periodic closures. Carl J. Eckhardt Jr., head of the Physical Plant, oversaw construction and devised the lighting system, cementing its role as a beacon of university pride.
In recent years, the Tower has continued to evolve while preserving its historic significance. In 2022, the University of Texas Board of Regents approved a $70 million renovation project, set to begin in January 2025 and conclude by 2027, marking the Tower’s first major restoration in its nearly 90-year history. The project aims to restore the limestone exterior, enhance the observation deck, and upgrade the carillon, while also beautifying the surrounding Main Mall. The Tower remains a vibrant symbol and a focal point for campus events. As UT Austin prepares for the Tower’s centennial, it stands as a testament to the university’s academic excellence, resilience, and enduring connection to the Austin community

About Me: Matt Jenkins, Proud Husband and Father to 3 daughters living in Dublin, Ohio and back into LEGO big time..

After seeing the LEGO Movie a few years ago, I asked my parents to bring down some of my old LEGO.  I loved building as a kid, and surely my older self, now married with a daughter, would love to play and build again!  Being a big time college football fan (Go Bucks!) I decided to make Mini Ohio Stadium out of LEGO on a 16x16 plate.  I thought it looked cool, so I started making other stadiums, NFL, MLB, Soccer, etc.  I ended up getting featured on the ESPN Big Ten blog in Nov 2015, and since then, I have sold over 10,000 Custom LEGO stadium sets on Etsy, with over 1,000+ 5 star reviews!!  Now, as a Dad of three girls, selling custom LEGO sets is a nice side hustle, and let's me save some money for my girls.  I hope you like these models and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments or requests.  Thanks -Matt

Perfect gift for a young Univ of TX fan

Bought this for my grandson who has attended many UT football games. His mother and her 3 brothers all graduated from the Univ of Texas and he loves Legos so it was the perfect gift. It lights up too so can be used as a night light.
