About Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium

The history of Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, often called "The Palace on the Prairie," began in 1923 on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman. The first game at the site was played on October 20, 1923, with the Oklahoma Sooners defeating Washington University of St. Louis 62-7. At that time, the setup was modest, featuring just a 500-seat bleacher on the east side, more akin to a practice field than a stadium. Named Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to honor university students and personnel who died in World War I, the facility saw its first permanent seating in 1925, when 16,000 seats were added on the west side at a cost of $293,000, largely funded through efforts led by head coach Bennie Owen, after whom the field was named Owen Field.

Expansion continued as the Sooners' football program grew in prominence. In 1929, the east side gained a matching grandstand, doubling the capacity to 32,000, where it remained for two decades. The 1940s and 1950s marked a golden era for the Sooners, with multiple national championships under coaches like Bud Wilkinson, who installed the iconic "Play Like a Champion" sign. This success drove further growth: the north end was enclosed in 1949, and the playing surface was lowered, increasing capacity to 55,000. By 1957, south end zone seating boosted the total to 61,836, though the south end wasn’t fully enclosed due to adjacent practice fields. The west side upper deck, added in 1975, pushed capacity to 70,000, and by 1980, permanent south end zone facilities raised it to 75,004, complete with coaches’ offices and training rooms.

The stadium’s modern era began with significant upgrades in the 21st century. In 2003, an east side upper deck with luxury suites increased capacity to 82,112, funded in part by a $12 million donation from the Gaylord Family, leading to the stadium’s renaming as Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. A major $160 million renovation, approved in 2015, enclosed the south end zone by 2016, adding premium seating and raising capacity to 83,489, though the official capacity later settled at 80,126 by 2019. This project also demolished and rebuilt the Barry Switzer Center, named after OU’s winningest coach, enhancing training facilities and fan amenities like a 7,800 square-foot LED scoreboard, the largest in the Big 12 at the time.

Today, Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium stands as one of college football’s iconic venues, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024 with a capacity that ranks it among the largest on-campus stadiums in the U.S. Its history reflects not just the growth of a facility but the evolution of a football program that has won seven national titles and maintained a sellout streak since 1999. The stadium’s journey from a simple bleacher setup to a modern bowl-shaped cathedral underscores the deep connection between the Sooners’ success and the passionate fanbase that fills its stands, a testament to the enduring legacy of Oklahoma football.

About Me: Matt Jenkins, Proud Husband and Father to 3 daughters living in Dublin, Ohio and back into LEGO big time..

After seeing the LEGO Movie a few years ago, I asked my parents to bring down some of my old LEGO.  I loved building as a kid, and surely my older self, now married with a daughter, would love to play and build again!  Being a big time college football fan (Go Bucks!) I decided to make Mini Ohio Stadium out of LEGO on a 16x16 plate.  I thought it looked cool, so I started making other stadiums, NFL, MLB, Soccer, etc.  I ended up getting featured on the ESPN Big Ten blog in Nov 2015, and since then, I have sold over 10,000 Custom LEGO stadium sets on Etsy, with over 1,000+ 5 star reviews!!  Now, as a Dad of three girls, selling custom LEGO sets is a nice side hustle, and let's me save some money for my girls.  I hope you like these models and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments or requests.  Thanks -Matt

I bought this as part of my partner’s Valentine’s Day gift this year! He went to OU for his undergrad and got grad school, and I’m currently in grad school at OU so we are big fans of Sooner football over here! He was so excited about this. It’s the favorite among the gifts I got him this year.
